Geodesignhub Survey

Hello 👋! Since 2019, there has been a strong push to boost active travel in Manchester. This includes all forms of sustainable transport powered by people, such as walking and cycling, as well as using mobility aids, known as ‘wheeling’. As part of this effort, the University of Manchester, in partnership with Manchester City Council, is helping the Moss Side community develop a new strategic plan for active travel.

This survey will collect the community’s proposals for this strategy, which will then be used in a workshop on 21 September 2024 to develop the community’s plan.

The survey is anonymous, open to everyone in the community, and you’re welcome to participate as many times as you like! Please share this link with other community members to bring as many neighbours as possible into the discussion.

Background & Introduction

Manchester City Council has a clear goal for Active Travel: enabling everyone to walk, wheel, or cycle as part of their daily routines—whether for school, work, shopping, or socialising—safely, comfortably, and happily. At the moment, several barriers make it difficult for people in neighbourhoods like Moss Side to incorporate active travel into their daily routines. Issues such as the lack of dedicated infrastructure, pavement parking creating physical obstacles, poor maintenance of routes due to overgrown vegetation and litter, and safety concerns all play a part.

The focus area of this project is Moss Side, a key hub for connecting various parts of the city and ensuring residents have better access to a cohesive and sustainable transportation system. The goal of this project is for the Moss Side community to develop its own proposal for a new active travel strategy, using a simple participatory design tool named Geodesignhub.

In July, the community came together in an initial workshop, discussing these issues and listing a series of principles for a new strategy that reflects the needs and aspirations of the community. The result was a set of guiding principles for this new strategy, presented below. Considering these principles (and any other ideas you find relevant), you can present as many proposals for a new active travel plan as you wish.

Geodesign Survey

The first step in participating in this process is through collecting the contributions of community members using a georeferenced survey, where you can share your ideas and proposals for the active travel strategy in Moss Side. We’d love to hear your thoughts!

Simply take part in the survey via the link below and check the schedule of the upcoming workshop.

Method Overview

•Check out the explanatory webpage on Moss Side to find additional information as well as updated meeting times and locations.

•Use the link below to contribute a proposal and draw a small diagram to locate your proposal on Moss Side.

•Watch the 20-second video on how to draw a proposal.

•Then, select the category or topic of your proposal (active travel, public space, green space, etc.).

•Finally, write a short description of what is proposed.

•You can repeat this survey as many times as you wish.

Geodesign Workshops

The proposals submitted by participants will be gathered and discussed in a workshop on 21 September at William Hulme Grammar School (M16 8PR). This workshop will bring together stakeholders to review the survey results and work on a solution that reflects the community’s vision for Moss Side’s active travel strategy. The outcome will be a series of maps and diagrams that will guide future planning efforts.
